High-quality, acid-free mats are essential for preserving the longevity and value of your artwork. Cheaper, acidic mats can lead to “mat burn,” an unsightly discoloration along the edges of your piece that diminishes its visual appeal and worth over time. At our studio, we exclusively use premium acid-free mats that not only enhance the presentation of your artwork but also provide long-term protection, ensuring your pieces remain vibrant and intact for years to come.

The Importance of Archival Mats in Professional Framing

Non-archival mats are one of the greatest threats to preserving artwork. Take, for example, a mat with a yellowed core—this discoloration signals a high acid content in the paper. Why does this happen? Non-archival mats are typically made from unrefined or partially refined wood pulp or recycled paper products, which contain residual lignin levels far higher than those found in cotton (1–2%). Additionally, these mats often cannot maintain a neutral or slightly alkaline pH and may include metals like iron or copper that oxidize and cause staining. Non-archival mats may also have colorants that bleed or an alum sizing that accelerates deterioration.

When artwork is framed with non-archival materials, it is at risk of fading, yellowing, staining, or even acid burns over time. Unfortunately, this damage is often irreversible, leading to a loss of both monetary and sentimental value.
