We are thrilled to introduce Carol Munro, a talented Canadian artist residing in the picturesque setting of Penticton, British Columbia. Her artistry is profoundly influenced by the natural beauty and geography of the Okanagan Valley, evident in the captivating essence of her work.
Carol's artistic vision is eloquently expressed in her own words: "There is a persistent whisper of things not-quite-seen, but powerful—forces and presences which are oddly familiar at some deep animal level within us. It is this sense of cycles—of movement, recurrence and belonging that I work to record when I put my mark on the paper or the canvas."
In her studio, Carol meticulously crafts her pieces, incorporating a unique technique that involves working images into a sanded surface, resulting in a rough and distressed finish. Through a combination of image transfer, pen, pastels, encaustic, and watercolor pencil, she enriches shapes and colors, adding depth and dimension to her creations. Some pieces are further enhanced with a layer of beeswax, enhancing their translucency and creating a sense of depth and distance.
Carol's paintings are more than mere representations; they are records of places, people, and events, faded and scraped over time like cherished memories. She explores the concept that our minds preserve experiences as they occurred, maintaining their freshness and vibrancy. In Carol's words, "Wayfinding traces the evolution of these works as my art moves through to the outer limits of encaustic and beyond, into mixed media, digital art, and textiles."
Carol Munro's work is a poignant reflection of the passage of time and the beauty that resides in memory. Her art invites us to delve into the enigma of recollection, where objects and characters are eroded by the roughshod passage of time, yet their beauty endures in the vivid landscapes of our minds.
